Electronic Music Travels is a journey through modern electronic music and the birth of the all electronic music open mic (EMOM). This is a travelogue of one man’s adventures in the world of live experimental and electronic music. Visiting cities such as Manchester, Bristol, Berlin, Amsterdam and London, the writer both witnesses and takes part in these wonderful creative events.
Written at a time when technology has brought electronic music production within easy reach of the masses, Martin Christie describes an underground music revolution; yet the book is also about the human side of creativity, and the growing community of artists and performers that are brought together within this broad church of sounds, where variety and incredible diversity is uncovered at each unpredictable night.
The electronic music open mics provide people of all backgrounds, ages and persuasions with a safe forum in which to develop their approach and test out new material in front of a receptive audience. Open to everyone, these events have mushroomed during the last few years to include all forms of software and hardware-based approaches. Founded for just such a purpose, the author reflects on this process as he travels through a backdrop of political and cultural upheaval, just before the global pandemic changed live music for the foreseeable future.
