The Smells of London I keep hearing all those voices as they speak in many tongues The sounds of a city turning round I try to find the voice that will speak those words again See if they will come, come what may The smell of poverty and greed The smell of alcohol and need The smell of happiness and joy The smell of what will be destroyed The smell of smoke from a gun The smell of people on the run The smell of fumes from a bus The smell of them, the smell of us The smell of love, the smell of fear The smell of one more lonely year The smell of cooking and of trains The smell of gas from the drains The smell of milk that’s been spilt The smell of last nights sick The smell of workers - fear the worst Has the bubble finally burst? The smell of anger and of hate The smell of an important date The smell of people and of birds The smell of smell of raining cats and dogs The smell of food and of soap From all around the world These are the smells of London London after the rain A further tightening of the belt A further tying of the laces And pulling up of socks These things have come to test us A swallowing of pride A further buttoning of the shirt Don’t loosen up that tie yet These things have come to test us These are the smells of London London after the rain.

When all my friends are gone When I heard of all those secrets I did not understand For lack of better knowledge I could not take a stand All my world was waiting With every step I took All my world was dancing The ground beneath me shook Remind me of the man That I used to be Remind me of the drinking fields Where we would once run free Remind me of my duties My duties to my friends Remind me of the winter And the rain that never ends People out in force Hazel blue the night Dusted of the carbon gases Failing in the light Talk to me about the places People just won’t go The wilderness and wild lands Where people will not show When all my friends are gone They must leave me in the end Tired of my restless ways The signals that I send When all my friends are strangers There to be ignored The good times and the happiness That my mind has stored

The Time of the Ancient Mariner An avalanche of houses, stretched out into the night I was looking for a sign, but I could not see the light The money it was burning, a hole in my pockets The sweat was pouring down like rain Go softly for the love of things that cannot speak their name Broken and corrupted, I had to raise the game An avalanche of buildings, I watched them falling down Earthquake of my mind, had come to make them good This land it is occupied by the spirits of the past The force that keeps us strong can also make us weak The summer’s now the winter, the winter never comes The spring replaced by autumn, the seasons are confused I am the ancient mariner Here’s to the ageing The passing of the years The process that will take us To our graves For though I am older The ancient mariner The fears that once blighted me are gone, gone, gone

Underground Den The girl that climbed the tree That had grown on fallow land Could see across the distance To the island and the sand To the walkers and the buildings Set out around the loch How she loved these adventures And the freedom of this place The boy that built the tunnel An underground den Hands as dirty as the soil Through which he had crawled Face like a coal miner But these things make grow Set fire to the newspapers And filled the place with smoke And I lost my direction I lost my way I lost my mind Just yesterday All I challenge All I see All these things Come back to me

Sun Worshipper I caught the sun today Out in the park Its raging heat against my face Infinite and calm I caught the sun today Held it in my hands Studied its collisions Its solar explosions I caught the sun today Nailed it to a wall Admired its power Its energy and warmth I caught the sun today After months of gloomy weather It created all of us In its infinity I caught the sun today Held it in my arms Squeezed every last drop Of sunshine from the day I set the controls for the heart of the sun It raised its burning breath Its endless scorching winds This great ball of fire Burning in the sky Process of such magnitude Come to see me right I caught the sun today Watched its every move “Is there anything I can do?” “To help you improve?” I caught the sun today These nuclear forces These molecular sources These carefully balanced curves In gravity and time The sun that gives us life It slowly takes away I held it in my hand Studied its geometry I caught the sun today Held it in my arms Squeezed every last drop Of sunshine from the day
